A History Of Our Turlock Church

Light of Christ Lutheran Church in Turlock has served the Turlock community for more than 97 years. The Turlock church was born when a small local group of "Swedish Lutherans" first organized in March of 1912. These Turlock citizens chose to start this new Church in Turlock as a community of faith where their beliefs in God our Lord and his Son Jesus Christ would be the primary focus of their weekly worship. They also prayed that the family values they held dear would be a primary focus for all church members. The congregation chose to name their new church Nazareth Lutheran Church out of respect for the teachings of Jesus of Nazareth. Initially the church had 42 adult members and 21 children. After meeting for Sunday worship in several temporary locations the congregation began building their first permanent Church at 125 South Orange Street in Turlock California.

In 1995 a Vision Committee, chaired by Dr. Norman Schmidt, was established to pursue the feasibility of moving to the north side of the city of Turlock because the city of Turlock was thought to be expanding in that direction, and the church hoped to stay close to the neighborhoods in which its membership lived. Dr. Everett Johnson expressed his intent to donate seven acres of land on the far north end of Turlock at the southwest corner of Crowell Rd. and Taylor Rd. After much prayer and discussion the congregation decided to re-locate to the North Side of Turlock just past the proposed location of the new CSU Stanislaus University.

After their move the congregation of Nazareth Lutheran Church voted to change their name to Light of Christ Lutheran Church. Once again out of respect for the teachings of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
